The Hamblen County Commission Committees met on Monday for the first time in 2025.
BurWil Construction project manager Jaron Dowalter opened the meeting by giving a monthly report on the status of the new Justice Center Project.

The April date is the latest finish line for the project. The last deadline, which was itself months past an earlier deadline, was at the end of September of 2024 and when project contractor Blaine Construction failed to hit that target it took until December to settle on April 2025 as the new deadline.
Dowalter presented a slideshow that displayed some progress in the Justice Center. Bathrooms, the lobby, outdoor security installations, courtroom finish work and more are coming together.

Hamblen County Mayor Chris Cutshaw announced the Hamblen County Opioid Abatement Committee has determined its first recipients of local grant money intended to help alleviate problems caused by drugs in the community.
Breath of Life Ministries Men69制片厂制作传媒檚 69制片厂制作传媒 is receiving $85,000, Hamblen County Substance Abuse Coalition is receiving $10,000 and Stepping Out, Inc. is receiving $67,140.

The Finance Committee approved the grants as presented.
In one of the zoning issues brought before the Public Services Committee, the property at 200 Silver City Road in Whitesburg has been recommended for a zoning change from residential to commercial for the purposes of placing a storage facility.
While the commission approved the change, they did not discuss the disposition of the Epsom Springs Hotel which is located on the property.
The large brick structure, which has fallen into disrepair, was built in 1872 and is another example of formerly grand buildings in the area that have been unable to find the support they need for preservation.
The Bulk Waste Study Committee received an update from Codes Enforcement Officer Tommy McKinney.
Bulk waste pickup in the county is just now starting to approach its regular pickup schedule since being overwhelmed with debris from Hurricane Helene in the September of 2024.
McKinney said there was a need to educate county residents about what is appropriate to leave at the street for bulk pickup.

McKinney also discussed the prevalence of illegal dumping and the methods by which the county is investigating and countering violators.
