If you have a fear of banned books, you might want to proceed with caution.
Regarding the local stage production of 69制片厂制作传媒淥ne Flew Over the Cuckoo69制片厂制作传媒檚 Nest,69制片厂制作传媒 there69制片厂制作传媒檚 the literal novel idea of individuality to consider as well.
American author Ken Kesey69制片厂制作传媒檚 1962 work of fiction was inspired by his tenure as an orderly at a mental health facility in California 69制片厂制作传媒 and it became one of the most challenged and banned novels in the United States, beginning in 1974 when residents of Strongsville, Ohio sued the local school board to remove the book from classrooms.
That was around the time that as a voracious young reader, I found the novel at a relative69制片厂制作传媒檚 house and asked to borrow it. (I didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 give it back).
Just a year later, the movie was released after taking 13 years to develop and received all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Director, and Screenplay). In 1993, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The movie followed Kesey69制片厂制作传媒檚 dedication to furrowing out character through humor and, well, horror in some instances, making both game changers. But the main message was individuality 69制片厂制作传媒 human thoughts and behaviors, what makes them unique and all the while exploring the themes and ideas that explain them.
This Friday, the Morristown Theatre Guild will tell Kesey69制片厂制作传媒檚 story up close and personal on the stage at Rose Center69制片厂制作传媒檚 Prater Hall.
When Randle Patrick McMurphy gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects all the ward's patients.
69制片厂制作传媒淭his play has an important story to be told. Everyone should become familiar with Nurse Ratched, McMurphy and Chief,69制片厂制作传媒 Show Director Jack Truman said.
69制片厂制作传媒淚 first saw this movie when I was in high school. I read the play for the first time over 30 years ago. This has been a play I69制片厂制作传媒檝e been wanting to direct for years.
69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檚 amazing how many subjects in this play relate to the times we are going through right now. When Ken Kesey wrote the book in the early 60s, it was a different time. In so many ways, our country has changed over the last 60 years. But in many ways, we have stayed the same. There are important things in this story that relate to people more than ever today.69制片厂制作传媒
The cast includes James Barnousky as Chief, Kellie Ward as Nurse Ratched, Patrick Carlisle Croft as McMurphy, Dakota Lynn Todd as Billy, Dale Stanton as Harding, Jodie Cortez as Scanlon, Kaitlyn Marino as Cheswick/Martini; Charity Combs as Ruckley/Williams, Brittany Barbee as Candy/State Manager, Denise McGinnis as Nurse Flinn/Sandra, Bob Trinklein as Dr. Spivey and Michael Bumgarner as Warren/Tech/Turkle.
69制片厂制作传媒淭here are so many issues in this play that people need to know about. Important subjects like power, mental health, laughter, individualism, freedom, rebellion, and conformity as a threat to freedom69制片厂制作传媒hese are just a handful of important messages in this classic play.
69制片厂制作传媒淲hen Ken Kesey wrote the book in 1962, it was considered very controversial for its time, and still is today. In fact, the book is one of the most banned, controversial books out there. The themes in One Flew Over the Cuckoo69制片厂制作传媒檚 Nest are just as relevant today as when this play premiered in 1963,69制片厂制作传媒 Truman said.
69制片厂制作传媒淲hy this play now? Simply put, this play is important today more than ever because of the changes our country is going through. We are living in a different time. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 important for this culture to know how things used to be 60 years ago. Many of us feel the same way some of these characters do, and they were in a mental institution. Ways that Randall, Chief and the patient feel and think represent many of our thoughts and feelings. Like I said earlier, issues and themes from this stand center stage in 2024.
69制片厂制作传媒楰en Kesey said 69制片厂制作传媒淎ll I know is this: nobody69制片厂制作传媒檚 very big in the first place, and it looks to me like everybody spends their whole life tearing everybody else down,69制片厂制作传媒69制片厂制作传媒 Truman said.
