When he69制片厂制作传媒檚 not busy teaching classes in acrylics or watercolors, Gibson might be found performing on guitar, even singing at a local venue, attending fundraisers in support of the community or just enjoying one of Morristown69制片厂制作传媒檚 parks on a Sunday morning.

We found him relaxing at Fred Miller Park on Sept. 15.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 am excited about this new magazine, because I think we need one. Not just art, per say, but what is going on. Because we are getting so many new people moving to this area. And we take for granted, some of us do, all the things going on 69制片厂制作传媒� but a new person does not know, and they need an outlet like this to be able to see what69制片厂制作传媒檚 happening,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

Gibson has lived in Morristown for 25 years 69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檚 been a little while,69制片厂制作传媒� he laughed.

Has the community always supported the arts?

69制片厂制作传媒淲ell, to a certain degree, but not so much when I first moved here,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚 had to search to find the Morristown Art Association. And I remember seeing a meeting listed in the 69制片厂制作传媒播 community calendar. I called the number, and I never will forget, this lady answered the phone 69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒極h, I69制片厂制作传媒檓 so sorry, I can69制片厂制作传媒檛 talk right now,69制片厂制作传媒� and the phone went dead. So, I waited. A week went by, and I thought, 69制片厂制作传媒榃ell, you know, I69制片厂制作传媒檓 going to call that number again.69制片厂制作传媒�

That lady turned out to be Peggy Brewer, longtime MAA president, member of the Rose Center Advisory Council and a founder of the successful Arts in the Park festival, an annual celebration of visual and performing arts, now in its 17th year, held in September at the Morristown Farmers Market and Green.

69制片厂制作传媒淪he had some really big, intense emergency happening right at the moment I called,69制片厂制作传媒� Gibson said. 69制片厂制作传媒淪he apologized and said, 69制片厂制作传媒業69制片厂制作传媒檓 so thankful you called back.69制片厂制作传媒� And that69制片厂制作传媒檚 how I got introduced to the MAA.69制片厂制作传媒�

After attending the first meeting, Gibson has remained an active member.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 know anything about Rose Center at that time. I69制片厂制作传媒檓 sure there was stuff happening there, but I didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 know where to look,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. His relationship with the historical school building (saved from demolition by a group of citizens in the 70s and repurposed as a cultural center) began by way of introduction through activities with the MAA.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 don69制片厂制作传媒檛 remember 69制片厂制作传媒� outside of the annual MAA juried arts show 69制片厂制作传媒� going to art exhibits or participating in events related to arts anywhere in Morristown. Now Rose Center occasionally would have something going on, but it wasn69制片厂制作传媒檛 always related to the arts,69制片厂制作传媒� Gibson said.

He remembers his first visit to the Rose Center office and noticing the building was quiet 69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒渁lmost like a morgue,69制片厂制作传媒� he said, 69制片厂制作传媒渘othing really going on.69制片厂制作传媒� Over the years, Gibson has been happy to see that Rose Center 69制片厂制作传媒� and the community 69制片厂制作传媒� has grown with regard to its involvement in the arts.

69制片厂制作传媒淵ou can69制片厂制作传媒檛 go into Rose Center unless you hear a lot of things happening, whether it69制片厂制作传媒檚 in Prater Hall with children practicing for a play or maybe the Morristown Theatre Guild getting ready for their latest production, or a concert. There69制片厂制作传媒檚 always something. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 changed, and it69制片厂制作传媒檚 changed for the better. There have been more and more and more things attracting folks to the building.

69制片厂制作传媒淲hen I say 69制片厂制作传媒榓rts69制片厂制作传媒� I include everything, even music, going on. There is music going on in Morristown, now, you almost have to pick and choose. Look at the Green, down by the Farmers Market 69制片厂制作传媒� that has developed into a centralized place to hold concerts, plus up at Fulton-Hill Park. Not only that, it69制片厂制作传媒檚 branched out, especially since 1907 Brewery came in downtown. And I think they69制片厂制作传媒檝e been here long enough; I think they69制片厂制作传媒檙e going to stay. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 worked; it69制片厂制作传媒檚 a well-known place. They69制片厂制作传媒檒l have music, a lot of new things, especially on Fridays, different activities. Plus, they will sponsor things. They69制片厂制作传媒檝e been very involved with the city and with the downtown. Oktoberfest, which is happening Oct. 5 down there, is something they69制片厂制作传媒檙e very involved with.

69制片厂制作传媒淭here69制片厂制作传媒檚 just so much more to do today than when I first moved here 25 years ago,69制片厂制作传媒� he added.

Gibson was visiting Morristown before he moved to the city. He lived in Knoxville for 12 years, where he was active in the arts scene, and often visited friends who lived in the Rogersville area. He moved to Hawkins County, where he lived for about a year.

69制片厂制作传媒淚t didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 take me long to realize that everything I needed and wanted I was driving to Morristown for,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

Before he made the move, Gibson and his art were featured in a full-page story published in an area newspaper, his first foray into local notoriety and a boost to his confidence about sharing his art on a community level - 69制片厂制作传媒淚 was just so happy about that,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淣ow, Rogersville is a thriving little art community, with the art gallery downtown 69制片厂制作传媒� but back then, they didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 have anything like that.69制片厂制作传媒�

Gibson69制片厂制作传媒檚 timeline of teaching art classes tracks the number of years he69制片厂制作传媒檚 lived in Morristown.

He thinks.

69制片厂制作传媒淚69制片厂制作传媒檓 not good at dates 69制片厂制作传媒� if I can get anything accurate within a decade, I69制片厂制作传媒檓 doing good,69制片厂制作传媒� he laughed.

He was the first artist, to anyone69制片厂制作传媒檚 recollection, to hold a Paint & Sip event in the area.

69制片厂制作传媒淗ow that got started, as all my adventures in art around here began, was someone asking me,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

Rose Center, and then the Senior Citizens Center, engaged him to teach classes, both starting in the same year. Then Rogersville69制片厂制作传媒檚 Hale Springs Inn came under new management and decided to incorporate art into its activities. The Inn69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chef, Nick Spirko, the son of longtime Morristown artist and community supporter, the late Bob Spirko, suggested Gibson.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 even know what a Paint & Sip was at the time, to be honest,69制片厂制作传媒� Gibson said.

After conducting research, Gibson gave it a go. The Inn furnished passes for two free drinks and fancy hors d69制片厂制作传媒榦euvres with the artist69制片厂制作传媒檚 fee. The first class of 20 was held in a small dining room located near the bar (which was a good thing, Gibson recalls).

69制片厂制作传媒淚t took me about six months of teaching up there to really get it down pat,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚 knew I couldn69制片厂制作传媒檛 do what I would call a 69制片厂制作传媒榮erious69制片厂制作传媒� piece of work, it had to be a fun piece, whether it was a bottle of wine or a glass. Because the participants69制片厂制作传媒� whole point of coming was to have fun on a Friday night.

69制片厂制作传媒淎s the classes progressed, Gibson brought business to the Inn as participants signed up from out of the area and would spend the night after.

69制片厂制作传媒淭hey would eat dinner there, drink and party. I really enjoyed being a part of that, even though half the time, I don69制片厂制作传媒檛 think they listened to me,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

The successful Paint & Sip events went on for about eight years at the Inn and kept Gibson busy on the weekends. His reputation as a patient instructor led to individuals requesting him for Paint & Sips at their homes in the Morristown area. Sommelier Jill Bruce hosted one of the first at her small ranch in Russellville (she now hosts wine tastings and wine pairing events at area venues). He also taught a similar class at a Hawkins County church 69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒淭hey served iced tea,69制片厂制作传媒� Gibson explained.

69制片厂制作传媒淓ven painting something simple, you69制片厂制作传媒檙e still learning, you69制片厂制作传媒檙e still being creative,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

The classes are still requested - the August Midsummer69制片厂制作传媒檚 Social fundraiser for Rose Center featured a Gibson Paint & Sip class in its auction 69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒淪o Paint & Sip is still an ongoing thing,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

MAA members, including Gibson, are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Mountain Makins69制片厂制作传媒� Festival held on the grounds of Rose center. Several members will set up individual booths inside - or tents outside - and the MAA also hosts a tent, where Gibson will be painting on both Saturday and Sunday.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 just love it. I69制片厂制作传媒檓 a people person, I love talking to people,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淪o, when I69制片厂制作传媒檓 doing a big painting and I69制片厂制作传媒檓 just sitting there doing my thing, enjoying the atmosphere and people walk up and watch, I69制片厂制作传媒檒l wait until they ask a question or I69制片厂制作传媒檒l even tell them they can ask a question, if they69制片厂制作传媒檇 like. I love that interaction. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 fun.69制片厂制作传媒�
