Cataloochee District Scouting Executive Jason Collins addressed the luncheon meeting of the Morristown Rotary Club on 29 at The Country Club.

Collins said that Scouting is the 69制片厂制作传媒渓argest and greatest youth organization in the world.69制片厂制作传媒� He said that Scouting transforms lives, including his. Not only does scouting transforms lives of youth in the nation, but especially locally.

69制片厂制作传媒淪couting serves a lot of at-risk youth and broken families,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭he inclusion of girls to Scouting has broadened our reach. Scouting is more than camping and badges, although my kids love badges at the courts of honor.69制片厂制作传媒�

In 2019, the Boy Scouts of America allowed girls to come into Scouting.

69制片厂制作传媒淭his historic opportunity has expanded opportunities for the girls to experience the transformative power of Scouting,69制片厂制作传媒� Collins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲hen I took on this job, I had apprehensions about girls in Scouting. Then I saw it firsthand. I will tell you right now, the female troops in our district are more mature and outgoing than the lion69制片厂制作传媒檚 share of our boy troops.69制片厂制作传媒�

During district events, such as Klondikes and Jamboree competitions, the girls are outperforming the boys in many cases in archery, tomahawk throwing and other events. It also provides girls the same access to leadership training, science and to promote equality.

69制片厂制作传媒淭hese girls take it serious(ly) and they are amazing,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭his last year, we had three girl Eagle Scouts.69制片厂制作传媒�

Achieving Eagle Scout status helps to open doors to scholarships, leadership opportunities and recognition in the community, Collins said.

69制片厂制作传媒淚f I didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 have 69制片厂制作传媒楨agle Scout69制片厂制作传媒� on my resume, I probably wouldn69制片厂制作传媒檛 have gotten half the interviews that I did in my career,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檚 a huge deal. (Only) about two to three percent of scouts achieve Eagle. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 tough, but you have a lot of fun while you do it.69制片厂制作传媒�

Including girls in Scouting makes for a stronger community, Collins said.

69制片厂制作传媒淲omen in Scouting has brought a diverse perspective, enriching the experience for all participants,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

69制片厂制作传媒淚t is a movement designed to help our youth to become young adults,69制片厂制作传媒� Collins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e are in the business of character development and leadership at our core. The kids are going to have fun. Let69制片厂制作传媒檚 have fun.69制片厂制作传媒�

When Collins drives to Knoxville and encounters traffic, he said that it takes everything he can muster to remember that a Scout has to be kind.

69制片厂制作传媒淚t becomes ingrained in you whether you like it or not,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

Collins said that Scouting provides the tools to navigate, make equitable decisions and help youth to grow into compassionate, capable adults.

Currently, there are no mixed-gender troops in the district, Collins said.

69制片厂制作传媒淎 lot of people will ask how that works,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚n the Great Smoky Mountain Council, we have boy troops and girl troops. We keep them segregated because at that age, let69制片厂制作传媒檚 face it, the hormones start going. Even at our district events, we have the girls in one area with their own bathroom facilities and the boys in another area with their bathroom facilities and camping. They come together for competition.69制片厂制作传媒�

In Hamblen County, youth are engaged in activities that teach essential life skills including teamwork, problem-solving and serving others.

69制片厂制作传媒淎t our core, we serve others at all times,69制片厂制作传媒� Collins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hat69制片厂制作传媒檚 a part of our oath. That is ingrained as well.69制片厂制作传媒�

Teamwork and leadership are critical attributes for success in not only school, but in the youths69制片厂制作传媒� future endeavors and personal lives, Collins said.

69制片厂制作传媒淧robably the most important aspect in Scouting is reaching our at-risk youth,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淗amblen County, as the rest of my counties in the Cataloochee District, faces challenges, such as poverty, substance abuse and family instability. Scouting offers a positive environment for young people to find mentors, role models who provide guidance and support.69制片厂制作传媒�

In many cases, the Scoutmaster is the only responsible adult in the youths69制片厂制作传媒� lives, Collins said.

69制片厂制作传媒淭hat69制片厂制作传媒檚 astounding,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚 was blessed to have wonderful parents who put up with me for years. That69制片厂制作传媒檚 not the case in many of our families today. For at-risk youth, Scouting creates a sense of belonging and family (through) troop meetings, camping (and) projects. These give the children or youths a space to explore their potential and stay on a constructive path. Our packs are families made up of Den Leaders and Scoutmasters. We work together, we are a pack. It69制片厂制作传媒檚 an excellent family unit.69制片厂制作传媒�

There are many youths who join Scouting who are from single-parent households or families affected by divorce.

69制片厂制作传媒淪couting provides a sense of family that69制片厂制作传媒檚 community-oriented,69制片厂制作传媒� Collins said. 69制片厂制作传媒�(It) offers the young people the emotional support and a network of caring adults and peers.69制片厂制作传媒�

The importance of Scouting echoes through the community, according to Collins.

69制片厂制作传媒淎 lot of kids nowadays have problems with communicating,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檙e trying to get them away from the video games. We have 93 schools in my district alone. That69制片厂制作传媒檚 a real problem.69制片厂制作传媒�

Collins told some stories about Scouts from Hamblen County. One boy from a troubled background found purpose and discipline through his troop and now goes to college, pursuing an engineering degree.

69制片厂制作传媒淚 can say that that echoes throughout my district and throughout our council,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.

A single mother has credited her daughter69制片厂制作传媒檚 involvement in Scouting in giving the girl confidence to run for Student Council and to lead community events and projects. Another group of scouts organized a food drive, collecting thousands of pounds of food for local families in need and exemplifying the spirit of service.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e had troops from all over to help out the folks in Cocke County,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚 had a unit all the way from Athens, Tennessee come up. A director and me spent several days in a distribution center breaking down all of the boxes with all of the food that came in them. We had troops handing out bottles and putting together boxes for those who were in need. Our units 497 and 1497 there are fantastic and we69制片厂制作传媒檒l honor them at our Cocke County event.69制片厂制作传媒�

The Scouting movement is getting ready to celebrate its 115th anniversary. The Great Smoky Mountain Council has been around for 110 years.

Collins said that Scouting cannot succeed without the support of the community through monetary donations and supplies. One of the schools in Hamblen County had to have financial assistance in order for scouts to be able to be in a unit. The district pays for their books and uniforms (if needed). Around $500,000 is spent by the council for special circumstances.

We will fund raise year around to make that happen. I have found that those adults we have helped have been the best adult leaders.69制片厂制作传媒�

69制片厂制作传媒淲e need your backing,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e are a nonprofit organization. That69制片厂制作传媒檚 just the facts of it. We need volunteers and adult leaders. Getting qualified adult leadership is super important. We give them the training; we have an amazing youth protection training.69制片厂制作传媒�

The Good Scout Breakfast for Hamblen County Scouting will be held at 7:15 a.m., Thursday, April 17 at The Country Club. This year69制片厂制作传媒檚 honorees are Troop 91 Scout Leaders Larry and Jane Swinson.

69制片厂制作传媒淭hey have been integral not only in this community, but they have turned Troop 91 into a machine,69制片厂制作传媒� Collins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲hen other units come up to me and have a blueprint of what they do, they sit in on a meeting with Troop 91.69制片厂制作传媒�

The Smoky Mountain Council is comprised of six districts covering 21 East Tennessee counties and serving 7,326 scouts. There are 200 Scouting units across the 21 counties, including five packs, five troops, including an all-girls69制片厂制作传媒� troop, in Hamblen County.
