As the federal government is ramping up rhetoric around a policy of mass deportations under President Donald Trump, school systems around the country are keeping a close eye on changing policies in an effort to assure their students a safe learning environment.
Hamblen County is in the same boat.
Superintendent of Schools Arnold Bunch said he69制片厂制作传媒檚 met with principals and gone over basic guidance on how to react in the event that Immigration and Custom Officials arrive at a local school in search of a student or students.
69制片厂制作传媒淚 know this is a big concern with a lot of our families and a lot of our staff right now,69制片厂制作传媒 Bunch said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e had a meeting with principals to give them some basic guidelines. If someone were to arrive at a school, we will be polite and we will be professional.69制片厂制作传媒
Bunch said that if an agency arrives at a school, he or assistant superintendents Hugh Clement or Buddy Smith will be called to the scene to interact with those agencies.
The discussion comes after the Trump administration announced last month that it would allow federal immigration agencies to make arrests at schools, churches and hospitals, ending a policy that had been in effect since 2011.
In a statement, the Department of 69制片厂制作传媒land Security said: 69制片厂制作传媒淐riminals will no longer be able to hide in America69制片厂制作传媒檚 schools and churches to avoid arrest.69制片厂制作传媒
In the memo rescinding the policy, Acting 69制片厂制作传媒land Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman said it was unnecessary to have 69制片厂制作传媒渂right line rules69制片厂制作传媒 dictating where immigration laws can be enforced. But he said officers should continue using discretion and 69制片厂制作传媒渁 healthy dose of common sense69制片厂制作传媒 around entering sensitive locations, such as schools.
An estimated 733,000 school-aged children are in the U.S. illegally, according to the Migration Policy Institute. Many more have U.S. citizenship but have parents who are in the country illegally.
Bunch said the school system will protect the rights of its students while at school but will follow the law.
69制片厂制作传媒淥ur No. 1 job is educating students and making sure they are safe,69制片厂制作传媒 he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淏ut we can69制片厂制作传媒檛 and won69制片厂制作传媒檛 go against the law.69制片厂制作传媒
Bunch said if proper court documents are produced, the system will follow the law. He added the system will also follow the law in protecting students69制片厂制作传媒 data and information. Bunch added he is the only person in the school system authorized to release student data and he will only do that in accordance with the law.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檙e going to be professional. We69制片厂制作传媒檙e going to follow the law. And we69制片厂制作传媒檙e going to communicate as closely as we can with any officials that come here, if they come here,69制片厂制作传媒 he said.
Bunch said that he believes the community is on heightened alert after the raid on a Grainger County slaughterhouse in 2018.
In the course of arresting slaughterhouse officials who were found of violating tax law, many workers were detained and taken into the system. Many of the nearly 100 people who were detained had families in Hamblen County. Students came home to residences with no parents or no adults left to care for them.
A staging area was set up at the National Guard Armory and then Superintendent Dr. Jeff Perry opened Russellville School next door as a place for families to stay while they waited for information on their loved ones.
Later a vigil was hosted at Hillcrest Elementary.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of the workers 69制片厂制作传媒 who alleged mistreatment and abuse - was settled for $1.175 million.
Ultimately, Bunch said that today immigration status is not the concern of the Hamblen County school system.
69制片厂制作传媒淢y understanding is we have never asked about the immigration status of our students,69制片厂制作传媒 he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚f a new student shows up with proof of residency, we educate them. We open our doors, we welcome them, we educate them all and we love them all.69制片厂制作传媒
