Through this program, Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel will receive up to $20,000 in funding for both planning and capital improvements to the building.
Since 2019, Partners for Sacred Places69制片厂制作传媒 program has successfully assisted cohorts of culturally significant, historic sacred places located across four Central Appalachian states (North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia.)
This organization has provided capacity-building training and support for the preservation of historic buildings through offering matching funds for restoration and repair.
The program has helped many churches to sustain their presence in the community and has assisted with preserving folk art, architecture, and cultural traditions.
Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel represents a rich cultural history in Hamblen County. Originally founded in a log structure, the Chapel began holding services in the community of Russellville in 1872.
Called at the time Russellville Methodist Church, the building also acted as school for African American children just some seven years after Emancipation.
The first trustees of that church included S.N. and Elbert Bewley, Glen Hall, Arthur Taylor, C.C. Rice and Charles Cheatham.
Around 1900, the church was renamed Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel M.E. Church and a new building was erected. Reverend James Hawkins, Sr. conducted the first sermon and it is in this structure where the congregation continues to worship today.
Internationally-known artist and Russellville native, Sammie Nicely also called Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel home.
Nicely was also a youth arts educator and founder of From Africa to Appalachia.
His life69制片厂制作传媒檚 work was the expression of African American and Appalachian ethnic and cultural heritage through exhibition and instruction.
His final resting place adjoins Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel grounds.
With this history in mind, and more than 150 years since its founding, the members of Bewley69制片厂制作传媒檚 Chapel are moving forward with needed restoration and long-term preservation efforts with the next 150 years in sight.
