When the Morristown Task Force on Diversity69制片厂制作传媒檚 Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast returns on Monday, in addition to a WNBA legend keynote speaker, a number of community members will be presented awards for their service.
Among them an educator and administrator, a coach, athletic director and college administrator, a doctor and healthcare administrator and a a local industry leader.
Each year the Task Force presents the breakfast that features a keynote speaker, a number of musical performances and the recognition of Community Service Award winners. This year the keynote speaker will be WNBA legend Kym Hampton, who is now a singer, a model and a motivational speaker.
The Community Service Award Winners will be:
Ann Bowen
Bowen Ann was born and raised in Jefferson City during the the time of desegregation, She was in the last graduating class of Nelson Merry High School in 1965, choosing to stay with her school and faculty rather than move to an integrated school her senior year.
She was the last 69制片厂制作传媒coming Queen and the Salutatorian of her graduating class.
After high school, Ann69制片厂制作传媒檚 aspiration was to work at Magnavox and buy a pink Mustang, but her stepmother had other ideas .
So instead, Bowen enrolled in what is now known as Tennessee State University.
After a semester, a homesick Bowen returned home and attended Carson-Newman College.
She graduated with a Bachelor69制片厂制作传媒檚 degree in History from Carson-Newman in 1969 and became the second African American to graduate from that institution. To further her education, Ann then received her Master69制片厂制作传媒檚 Degree in Education from Union College in 1979 and her Ed.S. from Lincoln Memorial University in 2002.
Her career as an educator began with teaching middle school. She taught for nine years before working in the field of higher education.
While working at Walters State Community College, she was the first Coordinator of Disability Services for any community college in the state and worked in Placement Services.
She worked hard for the students of WSCC and diligently worked her way from coordinator, to Director, to Assistant Dean, to Dean, and finally Assistant Vice-President. She finished her full-time career as the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity and Assistant Vice-President of Student Affairs.
In this capacity she supervised, Disability Services, Diversity Services, Counseling and Testing, and Financial Aid.
She retired in 2018 after 46 years of working for the state of Tennessee.
She returned to work on a part-time basis in 2021 when help was needed to fill in for a terminally ill employee.
In addition to her role as an educator, Bowen works tirelessly in her church and in the community. She is currently and has been the President of the Senior Missionary Society at her church, Martha Davis Baptist Church. She also is an usher, and coordinates devotion most Sundays. She leads the church in participating in Operation Shoe Box, collecting supplies for Isaiah House, Safe Space, the homeless, disaster reliefs such as for several floods and many other community-related endeavors. She has a heart for helping those in need.
Some of the awards she has received includes Who69制片厂制作传媒檚 Who Among America69制片厂制作传媒檚 Teachers, AHERN Professional of the year, WSCC Distinguished Administrative Staff award three times, and WSCC President69制片厂制作传媒檚 Meritorious Achievement in Leadership Award.
Ann has been married to John Bowen for over 52 years. They are the proud parents of Roxanne, Jordan, and Goddaughter, Alyssa as well as Natasha, David, and Jason. Ann is also 69制片厂制作传媒淢imi69制片厂制作传媒 to Jacob and Natalie and 69制片厂制作传媒淕ammy69制片厂制作传媒 to Eason. She loves her dog Samantha like her children and opens her heart and home to all who are in need.
Desmond Pierce
Desmond Pierce, a proud Morristown native and Morristown West High School graduate, has built a career defined by leadership, community impact, and a passion for athletics. The son of Johnny and Cindy Jones, His roots in East Tennessee run deep, shaping his values and work ethic.
He began his professional journey as the Head Coach of Track & Field and Cross Country at King University, where he guided student-athletes to success both on the track and in the classroom. His leadership and vision led him to Trevecca Nazarene University, where he served as Assistant Athletic Director, excelling in program development, operations, and fostering meaningful connections with the university69制片厂制作传媒檚 community.
PIerce then transitioned to the University of Pittsburgh, where he thrived as a member of the Piercemajor gifts fundraising team.
Now serving as the Executive Director of Annual Giving at ETSU, Pierce brings his wealth of experience and unwavering dedication to his alma mater, helping drive transformative philanthropy. He and his wife Ashley, a former ETSU Track & Field pole vaulter, are proud to raise their daughter Oakley in the heart of the Johnson City community.
Pierce is thrilled to give back to the university and region that have played such a pivotal role in his life.
Priscilla Treece Johnson, M.D., PHD
A graduate of ETSU, EVMS and Emory, Priscilla Johnson is recently retired after 35 years in medicine, including clinical operations at Morehouse School of Medicine where she also served as Associate Director for Patient Care, Clinical Operations, and Care Clinical Interaction Network Director, Cardiovascular Intensive Care at Emory and Grady Hospitals.
She also worked in consortium with Emory University, and Georgia Tech on collaborations between the institutions on minority health ,and is known as an experienced executive in the field of healthcare, clinical research and critical care.
Her work has been nationally recognized, as well as internationally for her contribution to community service, and in the advancing the field of research. She has also worked to improve the health practices of members of various communities throughout the nation, whether it was grants in consortium with universities such as John Hopkins, Howard, University of Puerto Rico, etc. and the National Institute of Health, NASA with Dr Mae Jemison, former astronaut, the NFL former players, and others along with several publications.
Born and raised in Morristown, Johnson loves to relive days there and share some of its rich history
When desegregation became official, the principal of West High approached her family about her attending Morristown Junior High School, making her one the first black students for the Morristown schools, followed the next semester by Adrian Wallace, Michael Bragg. and Wilbert Cherry.
She has been a recipient of more than 30 service awards and educational awards including Women of the Year Volunteer for the American Heart Association, Black Clergies Community Service award, Outstanding Service Award for the International Association for Hypertension in Blacks, other healthcare achievements, and a finalist in the Atlanta, Business Chronicles, Healthcare Worker of the year and on. She69制片厂制作传媒檚 has also done over 100 presentations relevant to heart health, diabetes, lifestyle, challenges, as well as the recruitment of African-Americans into clinical research across the nation, as well as in Puerto Rico.
She also holds two medical patents in data collection and storage.
Whether she is working with the medical unit at Hosea Feed the Hungry or with homeless individuals living under a bridge, she69制片厂制作传媒檚 constantly educating all those willing to listen on the perils of diabetes and hypertension, and emphasizing how best they can fare while living on the street.
She also works with a women domestic violence unit.
Another one of her passions is the medical team with her church, and she has a program called Steward of the Temple, where all types of disparitiesand education approaches are discussed. This class curriculum received a certificate of acknowledgment and appreciation from the Department of Health and Human Services, signed by acting HHS Secretary Sylvia Barwell and was presented at the Denim and Diamond gala hosted by the Georgia Diabetes Association/Coalition as well as personal award for outstanding volunteer.
Affectionately known as Dr. J by patients, participants, or colleagues, she cohosted a weekly radio show called Community Health Quest in a.m. on WYZE, dealing with today69制片厂制作传媒檚 health disparity issues, using her humor and caring delivery of information.Her audience experienced thousands of moments of memorable practical information and she always says her purpose in life is to serve 69制片厂制作传媒淥thers.69制片厂制作传媒
Alex Rom-Roginski
The president of Colortech, Inc. a manufacturer of color and additives for plastics, Rom-Roginski has been employed there since 1987. He previously worked in a variety of engineering roles in the petrochemical and utility industries.
He is married to Tish Jones and is the proud 69制片厂制作传媒榖onus dad69制片厂制作传媒 of Julia McCoy. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, with a BASc in Mechanical Engineering, summa cum laude, and a naturalized United States citizen, 2005, originally from Toronto, Canada.
