After nine years of inactivity, the Key Club at Morristown-Hamblen High School West has risen like a phoenix from the ashes.
Rachel Lakins and Heather Cooper, both teachers in the English department at West, stepped in as Key Club sponsors for the 2023-24 school year.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e just want to engage with them and them engage with us,69制片厂制作传媒 Kiwanis Club President Jimmy Dodson said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e may even go to some of their meetings. They69制片厂制作传媒檙e already doing some great things.69制片厂制作传媒
Lakins explained that Key Club is a student-led international organization that provides its members an opportunity for an introduction to the Kiwanis clubs.
69制片厂制作传媒淚 was the president of Key Club at West back in 2004,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檚 important to me that we help build character and leadership. That69制片厂制作传媒檚 why I wanted to get Key Club back into action.69制片厂制作传媒
Key Clubs share character-building, caring and inclusiveness, Lakins said.
69制片厂制作传媒淭hey69制片厂制作传媒檙e super important, especially in a high school environment,69制片厂制作传媒 she said.
The club had fallen inactive, last meeting in 2015. West received a letter from Key Clubs saying that the charter given to West was going to be cancelled unless the club was reinstated. After no one stepped forward to help reform the Key Club, Lakins volunteered along with Cooper, who was in her first year at West after teaching in Greene County.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e went through the process of reactivation,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淪tudents must have permission from the system to participate, a total of 30 hours of community service a year (it can be broken up over both semesters). Those not meeting the community service hours will be put on probation.69制片厂制作传媒
Ten hours of the 30 hours must be performed within the Key Club, Lakins said.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e had a couple of members whose parents are involved in the community,69制片厂制作传媒 Cooper said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hey will go way above and beyond the 30 hours. We welcome that. They have to be at meetings, pay dues in full and turn in hours every month.69制片厂制作传媒
The first year of the reconstituted club had 18 members and all paperwork and dues were done prior to the deadline.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e actually had enough money in our old Key Club account to pay those dues,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭he students were able to pay their $14 dues.69制片厂制作传媒
Key Club Helps The Daily Bread at Thanksgiving
The West Key Club had some core service projects during the first year. The first project was the Thanksgiving event for The Daily Bread Community Kitchen.
69制片厂制作传媒淚 reached out to The Daily Bread,69制片厂制作传媒 Cooper said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hey were so happy that we called. A lot of people don69制片厂制作传媒檛 think when donating food about plates, napkins and cups (and even boxes for the meals). We worked together and our students set up donation bins at school to donate items. A few parents wrote checks and I was able to go to Walmart the week before Thanksgiving.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e were able to use the donated items and helped to have enough supplies for The Daily Bread to cover a meal for 500 people,69制片厂制作传媒 Cooper said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hat69制片厂制作传媒檚 plates, cups, napkins, cutlery, serving utensils.69制片厂制作传媒
The club also received donations of pies for dessert the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
69制片厂制作传媒淭hey were very happy to have us help with that,69制片厂制作传媒 Cooper said.
The Christmas Project
Lakins said that West69制片厂制作传媒檚 Counseling department sends out an email each year about less fortunate students having needs at Christmas.
69制片厂制作传媒淭here were about 10 to 11 students that they buy for,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭he faculty compiles Christmas 69制片厂制作传媒榃ish Lists.69制片厂制作传媒 The elementary students get attention through the 69制片厂制作传媒楢ngel Trees69制片厂制作传媒 at the mall that goes through elementary schools. You don69制片厂制作传媒檛 see this much in the high schools. The counseling department doubled the amount of students in need to close to 30 kids. We talked to our crew and we spent around $150 on each of the kids.69制片厂制作传媒
69制片厂制作传媒淭hey were excited, too, because they were spending on kids their age,69制片厂制作传媒 Cooper said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hey knew them and it was like they could give back to their classmates.69制片厂制作传媒
The gift requests varied between mechanical pencils and gift cards to food places.
Key Club Week
The third event by the club was Key Club Week. Members wore pins purchased for the club all week long. Events included random acts of kindness and a breakfast to connect the K69制片厂制作传媒檚.
69制片厂制作传媒淚 made waffles that day,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e learned about community and each other. We were connecting the 69制片厂制作传媒楰69制片厂制作传媒檚.69制片厂制作传媒69制片厂制作传媒
The week of activities resulted in recruitment of three new members.
Thirst Project
The final project for the club was the 69制片厂制作传媒淭hirst Project.69制片厂制作传媒 Members participated in a step challenge where members had to walk 13 miles to a water source and 13 miles back to relate to other countries where people have to walk long ways to water sources.
69制片厂制作传媒淭hey participated in a step challenge where they were trying to meet that same quota,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e also raised $125 in donations to the 69制片厂制作传媒楾hirst Project69制片厂制作传媒 charity, equaling providing of water to 12 people.69制片厂制作传媒
The goal was to cover one person.
Goals for the 2024-25 Year
Goals for the club in the new school year are to increase West69制片厂制作传媒檚 participation in the different projects.
69制片厂制作传媒淲e had a lot of freshman members, seeing that Cooper is a freshman teacher,69制片厂制作传媒 Lakins said. 69制片厂制作传媒淗opefully, they can corral some more members so the club could grow with them. We want to help The Daily Bread more this year. We also want to pick up another service project in the spring.69制片厂制作传媒
