KNOXVILLE 69制片厂制作传媒 Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel is a prime example of the old mantra 69制片厂制作传媒減atience is a virtue69制片厂制作传媒.
The offensive numbers the Volunteers put up during the 2022 season were enough to make people69制片厂制作传媒檚 heads spin as former quarterback Hendon Hooker carried his team to a number one national ranking when the first playoff poll came out and was in the Heisman Trophy conversation until a devastating injury ended his season against South Carolina. Joe Milton III played the last few games and won the bowl game to end the 2022 season and set himself up as the starting QB in 2023. Milton had a rocket arm (remember the video of him throwing an orange over 100 yards?) but struggled with control and consistency at times last season. Things started well enough for Milton in the season opener against Virginia as he finished the game with 201 yards with two passing touchdowns and two more on the ground as the Vols hammered the Cavaliers 49-13. Milton could put up 200-plus yard games but could also look out of sorts like he did in a loss at Missouri where he was only 17-of-30 for 147 yards.
Standing on the sidelines last year was former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava who fans were clamoring for to enter the game to try to get UT69制片厂制作传媒檚 offense to what it was in 2022. Heupel was resolute that Iamaleava needed time to learn the system, get stronger and eventually set himself up to take over the offense in 2024. Heupel knew that exhibiting his star quarterback could only come when he was ready, not when the fans and media wanted to see the California native trot out as the starter. Through two games 69制片厂制作传媒 last year69制片厂制作传媒檚 bowl game against Iowa and the season opener last week against Chattanooga 69制片厂制作传媒 Heupel69制片厂制作传媒檚 patient development of Iamaleava has proven to be the right decision.
After torching Vanderbilt for 383 yards and six total touchdowns in the regular season finale, Milton decided to not play in the bowl game and that opened the door for Iamaleava to earn his first start. The Vols played their cards pretty close to the chest as he went 12-of-19 for 151 yards and a touchdown against the Hawkeyes. Heupel didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 show much because he didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 have to as Iowa69制片厂制作传媒檚 anemic offense simply could never score enough points to beat Tennessee.
Then came the Chattanooga game. Iamaleava sprayed the ball all over the field last week as he finished 22-of-28 for 314 yards and three touchdowns. His passes were absolute dimes as he found multiple receivers who made their receptions look easy with the way Iamaleava dropped them out of the sky or threaded the needle between Moc defenders. He couldn69制片厂制作传媒檛 miss early on as he was true on his first 10 passes. It was obvious that Iamaleava had complete command of the offense and was able to pretty much do whatever he wanted to do when he wanted to do it as the Vols finished the game 69-3, the third-highest winning margin in the modern era.
If Heupel would not have been patient last year and benched Milton in favor of Iamaleava, would it have produced any more wins for Tennessee? Three of Tennessee69制片厂制作传媒檚 four losses last year were to teams who were just better than the Vols: Alabama, Missouri and Georgia. The only bad loss UT had was to an exceptionally bad Florida team where Milton still managed to throw for 287 yards and two scores. Tennessee69制片厂制作传媒檚 biggest problem against the Gators was their inability to run the ball as they finished with only 100 rushing yards. Could Iamaleva change the outcome of the Florida game? It was highly doubtful considering it was only the third game of the season and he was still acclimating to the new system.
Instead, Heupel showed why he is so good at developing quarterbacks over time as he has prepared Iamaleava to put up big numbers this year instead of throwing him to the wolves of the SEC schedule last year. True, Chattanooga didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 provide much of a test in the opener, but the redshirt freshman still had to read defenses, find receivers, and make plays and make them he did. This week will be a bigger test against a solid NC State team and we will know more after Saturday69制片厂制作传媒檚 game in Charlotte but one thing appears to be absolutely true: Josh Heupel69制片厂制作传媒檚 patience in how he has played Iamaleva has paid off.
Scouting the Wolfpack
Tennessee will face NC State in the Duke69制片厂制作传媒檚 Mayo Classic Saturday night, a team that has been accustomed to winning as they are just one of five teams in the Power 4 that has won eight or more games in each of the past four seasons. Head coach Dave Doeren has turned the Wolfpack into a consistent winner in his 12 seasons in Raleigh. Grayson McCall is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the nation as he has passed for 10,323 yards in 43 career games at Coastal Carolina and NC State. While the Pack will air it out of against the Vols, their defense makes life hard for opposing quarterbacks as they lead the nation in interceptions over the last four seasons. NC State downed Western Carolina 38-21 in their opener on August 29 but had to rally to do it, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. McCall threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns and running back Jordan Waters ran for 124 yards and two scores.
Coach Speak
While Heupel was pleased with the way the Vols played last Saturday against Chattanooga, he is always looking for improvement. 69制片厂制作传媒淓verybody faces the same challenge. As a competitor, you can live in what everybody was talking about last week, but the reality is that you69制片厂制作传媒檙e only as good as your next performance. Prepare, practice the right way and get ready to go play.69制片厂制作传媒 Senior safety Will Brooks echoed his coach69制片厂制作传媒檚 point in the weekly press conference on Monday. 69制片厂制作传媒淥ur coaches do a good job of finding our weaknesses, pointing those out to us and just making sure we are continuously improving throughout the season so we are getting better each week.69制片厂制作传媒
To The Max听听
The Vols broke in a new placekicker last week and Heupel said he liked what he saw in Max Gilbert. 69制片厂制作传媒淩eally strong leg. I like his competitive makeup, very confident and comfortable no matter what situation we69制片厂制作传媒檝e put him in. Obviously, game day is a different deal but he69制片厂制作传媒檚 been really solid. He69制片厂制作传媒檚 got a smooth swing, he69制片厂制作传媒檚 consistent, and I trust him.69制片厂制作传媒 That trust was earned as Gilbert hit field goals from 36 and 42 yards and was good on all seven of his extra-point attempts.
I69制片厂制作传媒檝e Got Your Back
Pre-season All-American center Cooper Mays has taken care of his quarterbacks as the Knoxville native hasn69制片厂制作传媒檛 allowed the opposing defense to sack his signal-caller in 15 straight games.
The Series
Saturday will be the fourth time the two teams have met and the first time they have met when both were ranked. Tennessee downed the Pack 35-21 in 2012 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff contest in Atlanta. Tennessee was the first opponent NC State faced when they began a football program in 1893. The Vols are getting used to facing an ACC foe as this is the fourth straight season Tennessee has played a team from that conference (Pitt, Clemson, Virginia and NC State) and next year the season will begin in Atlanta against Syracuse. If Tennessee beats NC State, it will be the 11th non-conference win in a row for the Big Orange.听
Kickoff In Charlotte
The game between #12 Tennessee and #23 NC State is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
