Bulk waste in Hamblen County is backing up even as work continues to clear the largest debris problem in county history.
Codes Enforcement Officer Tommy McKinney said he69制片厂制作传媒檚 getting calls about trash sitting out too long at the road. He said the recent flooding has caused a unique delay that county employees are working hard to overcome so things can go back to normal.
69制片厂制作传媒淩ight now we have a lot of bulk waste sitting out because of the storm,69制片厂制作传媒 he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淎s far as the storm debris (is concerned), I69制片厂制作传媒檝e never seen anything like it.69制片厂制作传媒
While flooding in Hamblen County from Hurricane Helene wasn69制片厂制作传媒檛 as intense as some of its more mountainous neighbors, damage to the southern part of the county along the Nolichucky River all but wiped out several farms and created enough damage for the county to be included in disaster declarations.
McKinney said those declarations have allowed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to approve special sites in the East Tennessee Progress Center to be used for disposal of plant debris from the storm.
Currently, debris for the county stands at, roughly, 6600 cubic feet, or 270 loads delivered to the site, which doesn69制片厂制作传媒檛 include the first loads of debris gathered at the site.
Once all the debris is collected, a specialist contractor will burn the material in accordance with federal guidelines.
The City of Morristown entered into an inter-local agreement with Hamblen County to make available the site in the industrial park and the two governments are working together with FEMA to make sure storm damage recovery is as expedited as possible.
Hamblen County workers are putting in extra hours and equipment is being utilized more than usual, but McKinney said FEMA is going to pay much of the extra cost of the debris cleanup effort.
69制片厂制作传媒(It looks like) FEMA is going to reimburse us around 70% of (the cleanup costs),69制片厂制作传媒 he said.
McKinney said he hopes the public will be understanding and patient about the backup of more 69制片厂制作传媒渘ormal69制片厂制作传媒 bulk waste that has stayed out at the roads too long.
Bulk waste workers are about to head to the west side of the county to collect fallen trees and other storm related damage to move to the FEMA site for disposal. After that, thing will start moving towards a more traditional waste pickup situation.
It will take around a month for bulk waste crews to push through the extra work.
69制片厂制作传媒淗opefully, they will have the brush cleared and cleaned up around the second week in December,69制片厂制作传媒 McKinney said.
He said he appreciates the patience and understanding of citizens as the county works through the unprecedented mess and if anyone needs more information, he is preparing a report for presentation at the Hamblen County Commission Committees meeting on Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
