Hatcher, Aiken and the gathered farmers spoke about the long term impact and the need for further recovery investment.

69制片厂制作传媒淪everal of the southeastern (agriculture) commissioners have already sent letters to their congressional delegations for block grants to be issued for ag communities to fill those holes that may be there and are going to be there,69制片厂制作传媒� Hatcher said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭his is a long-term recovery I mean some people think it may be decades or at least a decade so yeah so we wanted to make sure that the congressional delegation of Tennessee knows the urgency of it and they can advocate for us and maybe we69制片厂制作传媒檒l be successful in getting some block grants for the ag communities through congress.69制片厂制作传媒�

Eddie Gilbert said that U.S. Rep. Diana Harshbarger had already visited the farm and is communicating with farmers about recovery efforts.

State Senator Steve Southerland toured farmland before the Tuesday meeting and noted the destruction on both sides of the river.

69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檚 devastating, especially the number of houses that have washed down onto that property,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭he Gilberts leased (those fields) and now it69制片厂制作传媒檚 gone69制片厂制作传媒� They had soybeans in the field and it was all flattened out and there69制片厂制作传媒檚 four or five houses in the field. Southerland, whose senate district stretches across affected communities all the way up to Unicoi County, has observed damage from a helicopter tour with Gov. Bill Lee and met with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg during his visit this week. He said Tennessee officials are going to work with multiple legislative bodies, including his own, to help the area recover.

The enormous amount of damage has made it hard to even estimate losses and impacts; so much land has affected, new loss is being accounted for as debris removal continues, and it has only just started.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檝e lost most of our corn and soybeans, about 300 acres of corn and right at 200 acres of beans,69制片厂制作传媒� Gilbert said, with a rough estimate of 900 acres being affected on his farm. 69制片厂制作传媒淧asture is a mess from silt being deposited on it, there69制片厂制作传媒檚 muddy grass, all kinds of trash and garbage. We have one field that69制片厂制作传媒檚 got eight or nine houses, camps, and campers in it. (There are) a couple of tractors, all kinds of trees, motorcycles, boat motors, lawnmowers, four-wheelers 69制片厂制作传媒� and none of it69制片厂制作传媒檚 ours.69制片厂制作传媒�

Flooding doesn69制片厂制作传媒檛 respect property boundaries and several smaller operations were largely swept away.

Connie Holdway, whose farm sits on the river where Highway 160 crosses into Cocke County said her family lost pretty much everything.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e have 35 cattle we69制片厂制作传媒檝e lost; we still have 19 cattle remaining,69制片厂制作传媒� she said. 69制片厂制作传媒淲e lost all three homes on the farm. Lost all of our equipment. Virtually lost every stitch of clothes. I69制片厂制作传媒檓 wearing somebody else69制片厂制作传媒檚 clothes now that69制片厂制作传媒檚 been donated to me.69制片厂制作传媒�

In noting the help from other farmers and the wider community, Holdway and others remain hopeful and displayed gratitude, resolve and determination to push through.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檝e gotten donations from clothing to food to just love and support and prayers,69制片厂制作传媒� she said. We69制片厂制作传媒檙e so thankful that we69制片厂制作传媒檙e alive and praying for all the other families that have been disoriented and displaced and even lost families from the flood

69制片厂制作传媒�(Our farming community is) definitely tight-knit. We didn69制片厂制作传媒檛 have any fences left on our property and the Gilberts came and fenced up an area on our property to where we could actually move our cows69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒e69制片厂制作传媒檝e just been very blessed.

69制片厂制作传媒淭he community has been wonderful, like I said as a whole the faithful Christian community has been very wonderful,69制片厂制作传媒� Holdway said. 69制片厂制作传媒淒on Owens, he69制片厂制作传媒檚 in charge of God69制片厂制作传媒檚 Warehouse, was able to call and console me and help with the situation on the farm so we69制片厂制作传媒檙e so thankful and blessed; I69制片厂制作传媒檓 praising God for all this help.69制片厂制作传媒�

Gilbert also said the help has been meaningful.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檝e got neighbors that are hurt worse than we are,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淭hey69制片厂制作传媒檝e basically lost their homes and everything in it. Water did not get in our homes. It got up under a couple of family members69制片厂制作传媒� homes69制片厂制作传媒� 69制片厂制作传媒aptist Disaster Relief and numerous other agencies, churches, our church even fell in and helped us move furniture (when) we thought it was getting in the house. The volunteer side of the community has been awesome.69制片厂制作传媒�

Commissioner Hatcher said there were already agriculture specialists in the field assessing damage and doing work to help get things going and he noted the breadth of the help coming in.

69制片厂制作传媒淲hat is interesting to me is the volunteer response and the compassion that people are showing,69制片厂制作传媒� he said. 69制片厂制作传媒淐omplete strangers are coming here to volunteer from all over the country. I69制片厂制作传媒檝e seen some from Florida, from Arkansas69制片厂制作传媒� some hay has been shipped down from Canada69制片厂制作传媒�

69制片厂制作传媒淔armers are helping to take care of other farmers 69制片厂制作传媒� they69制片厂制作传媒檙e donating hay (and) paying for the freight. Fencing supplies 69制片厂制作传媒� I69制片厂制作传媒檝e seen loads of fencing supplies. The community has really come together in response to this hurricane.

69制片厂制作传媒淲e69制片厂制作传媒檙e partnering with the universities and we69制片厂制作传媒檒l be with both UT and and TSU extension and they already have people on ground in the communities. They69制片厂制作传媒檙e already accustomed to educating and trying to apply the most progressive ag practices. So they69制片厂制作传媒檙e continuing to do that and they69制片厂制作传媒檙e also going to be helping us evaluate the ag losses.

69制片厂制作传媒淎t some point we have to have an aggregate number of what the ag losses are for Tennessee so we can advocate for those block grants.69制片厂制作传媒�

Those losses aren69制片厂制作传媒檛 going to stop farming along the Nolichucky, and with help, hard work and grit all on full display, Eddie Gilbert is hopeful.

69制片厂制作传媒淚t69制片厂制作传媒檒l take a generation for it to heal, but I69制片厂制作传媒檓 not the first person to ever experience a tragedy like this or similar to this,69制片厂制作传媒� he said.
